I Wonder Why

You wonder why
I don't say I love you.
Yet here you sit in this food court
singing the praises of militant leaders
and fascists.
Advocating for the suffering
and death of my people.
The people who fought tooth and nail
for rights you were so freely given.

I've burnt bridges,
So I know what it looks like
when you start burning books.
Turning your back on those who matter
those who did their best to foster unity
those who fertilised the soil
so that we could grow up in a world
better than what they had.
And you would raze it to the ground
for the false promises
of dictators
who sold you on a small fortune
and the chance to grabhold of the power
you grew accustomed to society giving you.
You would put the lives
of my people on the line
for that modicum of power.
So I wonder why
I don't say I love you.
